As smoking declines in popularity, the ashtray has become an artifact of a bygone era. However during the early to mid-20th century, every household had an ashtray within arm’s reach. Simplistic in its function, this small object was an opportunity for designers to produce sculptural objects for market. These “silly little trinkets” - as Noguchi calls them - became an object of fascination for me. Very much like designing a chair, the ashtray became a practice of balancing beauty with function.
